Brands like Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike, Google are brands recognizable the world over. So is Ferrari and interestingly the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer was named ‘The World’s Strongest Brand’ in the 2019 Brand Finance Global 500 Report.

Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 out of Alfa Romeo’s race division as Auto Avio Costruzioni the company built its first car in 1940.

The “Cavallino Rampante” or ‘prancing horse’ was the symbol chosen by Ferrari and it is recognized by just about every man, woman and child on the planet!

The Ferrari road cars built in the 1940’s and early to mid-1950’s were built in very small numbers and it was not until the introduction of the 250 series cars that production numbers increased.

The 250 Series also contained some of the most special Ferraris ever built, including the Ferrari 250LM, 250 SWB, 250 California Spider and of course the 250 GTO.

Cars like the 250 GT California Spider and 250 GTO have become legends.

Felice Mario Boano was an Italian automobile designer and coachbuilder.

He joined Pininfarina in 1930 and bought Carrozeria Ghia Torino in 1944 when his friend Giacinto Ghia died.

Some creations from his Ghia period are: Alfa Romeo 6C2500, Lancia Aurelia, Karmann Ghia, Alfa Rome 1900SS, Ferrari 166, Ferrari 195.

In 1954 he founded Carrozzeria Boano with his son Gian Paolo Boano who also had been with him while at Ghia.

Pininfarina did not have the capacity to build the bodies in sufficient numbers for production. Instead, Boano was commissioned by Ferrari to construct the bodies following Pininfarina’s design.

Executed in either steel or aluminum, the “Boano Coupe” was mounted on the familiar 250 GT underpinnings.

After only three years, Carrozeria Boana closed, and his son in law, Ezio Ellena took over the 250 GT production at Carrozeria Ellena.

The Boanos are distinguished by their elegant ‘low roof’, and 68 cars were built before production switched to the ‘high roof’ Ellena, of which some 50 were made.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

This Boano coupe, according to Swiss marque authority Marcel Massini, and confirmed by the Ferrari Classiche Certificate was delivered new to Rome on April 1957, and shortly thereafter sold to the Mr. Irving P. Krick, son of Harry krick, an American meteorologist and inventor resident in California, but temporarily resident at the Hotel Excelsior in Rome, Italy.

Shortly thereafter, this Boano coupe was sent to their home in Denver, Colorado.

The Ferrari remained in Mr. Krick’s ownership for approximately 30 years and kept in a storage in Palm Springs.

In 1987 the Ferrari was purchased from Mr. ‘Pops’ Kalil, an entrepreneur, auctioneer and antique Persian carpet expert, resident in Florida.

In 2010, the car was sold by Kalil’s estate.

In September 2014 was acquired by Mr. peter Kumar domiciled in New York, as a rust-free, example that had never had a complete, professional restoration.

In 2020 this Boano coupé was sent to England, where several noted marque specialist shops were retained to furnish the car with its first complete and professional restoration.

The paint was carefully stripped, revealing a body underneath that was in very good condition.

In the course of the nut-and-bolt restoration of this car to its original condition, the electrical system was replaced and the upholstery renowned by classic Ferrari experts in England.

The restoration of the car’s distinctive Boano bodywork was similarly handled with tremendous skill by artisans.

More recently, the Ferrari received a no-expense-spared service by noted Ferrari specialists l”Officina in Belgium.

It has been certified by Ferrari Classiche as ‘matching numbers’, and their impressive Ferrari Classiche red book is with the car, as is Massini’s detailed report dated 15th November 2021.

The Colombo V12 is as much a work of art as it is an engineering masterpiece.

Once started, the engine emits an evocative yet subdued growl, and is supremely flexible on the road.
